Dorner Electronic: Setting New Standards in the Concrete Industry

Dorner Electronic is expanding its market leadership in automation technology for the construction and concrete industry through targeted funding initiatives.

Founded nearly 60 years ago, the family-owned company Dorner Electronic, based in Bregenzerwald, has transformed from a specialty electronics manufacturer into a pioneer in software development and a leading provider of control solutions and automation technology for the construction and concrete industry.

Today, Dorner Electronic employs approximately 100 people and develops control systems used worldwide. These systems precisely tailor concrete mixing processes to the specific requirements of various construction sites. As the European market leader, Dorner ensures the highest quality and efficiency in construction: the control systems calculate the optimal mix of sand, gravel, water, cement, and additives to guarantee maximum stability and quality while meeting all standards.

“Concrete comes in many varieties for different applications,” explains Matthias Droop, who co-manages the company alongside Kilian Dorner. “Whether for an industrial plant, a tunnel, or a marine canal, the consistency of the concrete must be precise, regardless of the application, precipitation, temperature, or other external conditions. Our control systems and integrated sensors continuously adjust the mix to ensure the result meets the highest standards.”

Digitizing the Transport Supply Chain with FFG Support

Research and Development (R&D) is deeply embedded in Dorner Electronic’s DNA and is a central success factor. “Our products must meet the highest demands of the construction and concrete industry,” emphasizes Droop. To achieve this, the company continually invests in developing innovative solutions, supported by a dedicated R&D team that evaluates new technologies and integrates them into existing products.

One recent breakthrough was made possible by funding from the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). Dorner received basic funding to digitize the entire transport supply chain. In collaboration with the Austrian Blockchain Center, Dorner developed a cloud-based invoicing system that uses blockchain technology to automate and optimize pricing and supply chain processes.

“Our mission is to support the construction process digitally, from planning to delivery,” says Droop. “The FFG funding was crucial for implementing such a complex project and testing new approaches.” The cloud-based invoicing solution has been in use by customers since mid-year and will gradually replace the existing system over the coming years. Droop is confident in its success: “This project not only provided us with valuable experience in blockchain but also significantly strengthened our international market position. We view innovation funding as a driver for internal developments and as a contribution to the progress of the entire industry.”

Strategic Focus on Research and Development

Dorner’s commitment to innovation has made the company internationally renowned for its adaptability and efficiency, with its software solutions deployed worldwide. By embedding R&D into all areas of the company, Dorner Electronic ensures it can quickly adopt new technologies and bring them to market.

“Our goal is to expand our market leadership in automation technology and make the construction and concrete industry more efficient and environmentally friendly in the long term,” concludes Droop. “Research funding is an invaluable support in achieving this. Partnering with experts like WISTO, who assist with applications and program selection, is highly recommended.”
