At an altitude of 1,725 meters, the Fraßenhütte is located in Bludenz. It can be reached from the mountain station of the Muttersbergbahn (1,401 m) in just over an hour via a root path and has been run by Gudrun Schimpfössl and Tenjing Sherpa for the past three years. For over 100 years, it has been a popular destination for hikers with its magnificent view and reputation as a sun terrace.
A Night’s Vacation
Four 4-bed rooms with bunk beds and a dormitory with 30 beds are available for overnight stays. In addition to the impressive view, overnight guests are rewarded with delicious dinners (often with a Nepalese influence, such as Sherpa noodles with arugula, Sherpa stew, or Dal Bhat) and a private sundowner terrace with a perfect view of the sunset towards the Swiss mountains. With a glass of wine or cider, it immediately feels like a vacation up here, allowing for wonderful relaxation.
Summit Ascent
After a delicious early morning breakfast, it is recommended to start the ascent to the Hoher Fraßen while it’s still cool. Although the summit may appear inconspicuous from below, almost disappearing into the dwarf pine forests, a breathtaking 360° panoramic view awaits summit climbers. The ascent through the dwarf pine forests from the Fraßenhütte to the 1,979-meter-high mountain takes about 45 minutes.
For those seeking variety on the descent, an alternative route from the summit back to the mountain station of the Muttersbergbahn is available (about 2 hours), or one can hike all the way to Bludenz (about 3 hours) or descend to Ludesch (about 3 hours from the summit, with the fork shortly above the Fraßenhütte).
A Small Adventure
The hike is also suitable for experienced young hikers. While the paths are steep, their short length makes them manageable with sufficient breaks. And the overnight stay at the hut is definitely an adventure for children.
